Organization Engineering

Team Integration

ePM uses computational simulation models to design high-performing organizations. Scientific analysis of an organization’s performance potential complements management experience with objective, factual information and neutralizes the influence of politics ad emotion.

SimVision® is ePM’s patented organization modeling and simulation technology. We use it to optimize the fit between an organization and its work, similar to the way engineers use a wind tunnel to optimize aircraft designs:

  • Measure how well the organization will perform
  • Uncover and fix design flaws prior to implementation
  • Explore ways to improve reliability and performance
  • Maximize the client’s return on capital employed.

SimVision is the only commercial simulator of human work performance. It is the product of more than twenty-five years of Stanford University research and development. ePM has successfully applied it to numerous commercial and industrial organizations over the past ten years. More than twenty universities around the world use it in research and classroom instruction.

SimVision simulation models provide more specific and practical information than benchmarks and best practices. They measure precisely how well this organization can accomplish this work:

  • How efficient is our organization design (how much effort is needed to manage the people in addition to managing the work)?
  • Can we reliably achieve our schedule, cost and quality objectives?
  • Where are communication, quality and safety most likely to fail, and what can we do to prevent it?
  • What resource groups are most likely to fail to meet their goals and what can we do to help them succeed?

Team Integration

Team Integration

ePM’s team integration service aligns all parts of the organization to work together harmoniously. Team integration raises productivity, reduces risk, and maximizes the return on capital employed. Our organization development and team facilitation experts help clients design and implement the physics of high-performing teams – work processes and behaviors:

  • Shared understanding of and commitment to mission and vision
  • Promise-based management embodied in measurable and integrated group and personal goals
  • Logically organized roles, responsibilities and accountability
  • Authority for decision making and issue resolution at the most appropriate level of the organization hierarchy
  • A communication strategy that reaches and seeks feedback from all levels.

ePM’s Team Integration Workshop Sequence establishes uniformly acceptable individual, team and organization behaviors using the enrollment-by-choice approach. It consists of a series of workshops …

  • Designed, managed, and facilitated by ePM consultants
  • Conducted by the client’s leaders
  • Intended to lay the foundations of alignment and prepare the organization for the ongoing integration journey.

In the workshops, leaders express their vision of the business and set the tone, priorities and expectations for their teams. ePM prepares leaders to execute the team integration sessions with our processes, facilitation, and support. Subsequent in situ coaching and development reinforces the workshop lessons and plans in the context of the organization’s daily work. ePM consultants observe and participate in day-to-day meetings and work sessions to:

  • Identify integration improvement needs and opportunities
  • Charter small teams to address them
  • Provide templates, tools and methods to help generate high levels of organization and team integration
  • Facilitate the chartered teams’ work
  • Introduce and propagate their solutions throughout the organization.

Leadership Development

Team Integration

ePM’s leadership development practice helps business executives and managers become more effective and successful leaders. Creating more competent leaders improves the organization’s ability to achieve its business objectives. Our organization development consultants and professional coaches help clients develop the chemistry of superior leadership:

  • Making and communicating sound and timely decisions
  • Articulating and standing for team values and intentions
  • Setting goals and managing progress
  • Delegating authority, empowering and mentoring subordinates.

The Leadership Alignment Sequence (LAS) is an accelerated workshop process that establishes a foundation for disciplined strategic thinking and decision making:

  • Develop or confirm the makeup and roles of the leadership team
  • Develop, refine, or confirm the organization’s charter and affirm the leaders’ commitment to it
  • Develop, refine, or confirm the vision, mission, goals and objectives
  • Develop and align on the governance and leadership process.

Leadership Alignment Ongoing (LAO) follows the workshop sequence and shapes leadership “physics” – how leaders conduct daily business. In situ leadership coaching produces two important benefits:

  • Leaders come to understand that development is an ingrained process rather than an event
  • Learning in the context of daily business is more relevant and more durable.

In LAO, our consultants participate in day-to-day meetings and working sessions with the program’s top leaders to:

  • Maintain focus on and continuity of priorities
  • Establish and propagate an effective communication strategy
  • Assure that leaders are thinking and acting strategically
  • Keep leaders looking forward and responding rather than looking backward and reacting.

Leadership Team Development (LTD) is delivered in parallel with LAO and shapes the “chemistry” of program governance and leadership — how leaders relate to and communicate with each other and their teams. We:

  • Identify and leverage personal development opportunities
  • Establish coaching as a part of a powerful leadership team
  • Provide individual coaching to leaders, selected managers and individual contributors (thought leaders)
  • Establish the conditions, leadership styles, and interpersonal relationships that will enable success on the superlative project of their careers.

Project Management

First Product: StageII Project Development

ePM’s project management service organizes, plans, staffs and delivers capital projects:

  • Provide highly experienced project managers, engineers, and other professionals
  • Assign a full-time team to work on-site with the client’s personnel
  • Apply ePM’s advanced technologies: SimVision, ePMSurvey™, and First Product™

We provide the personnel and technical resources that the client does not have and cannot easily or economically acquire.

ePM’s advanced, proprietary technologies enable our project personnel to deliver superior results and greater value than a typical project management contractor.

  • SimVision organization simulation technology optimizes the fit between the organization and its work. By testing many project plans and scenarios in a “virtual wind tunnel,” we reduce risks, improve reliability and maximize the client’s return on capital employed.
  • We use ePMSurvey to statistically measure and manage team alignment, integration and progress. This on-line survey instrument enables all project participants to confidentially surface risks and contribute to their mitigation. ePM’s body of survey results allows us to compare team performance and attitudes to other similar projects.
  • First Product is ePM’s project development and management methodology – a complete and customized set of work processes, tools and organizational elements. It aligns all activities on common goals and objectives and optimizes the project plan for revenue readiness. First Product is based on the Design for Six Sigma methodology and embodies the concept of Front End Loading project development.
